SimSand

Tiny worlds to watch

Tell me about SimSand now!

SimSand apps are like digital snow globes, or a bit of visual poetry... simulations of particles in a tiny box.

Each app is a standalone program that you can run on your computer in the background, or stare at with absolute focus. Every time you open the app, the results will be slightly different.

Can you figure out which particles stick and which repel?
Will there be breakfast tomorrow?

Yes, wonderful! How do I enjoy?!

Just download each app you'd like to try.

REMEMBER: You'll probably be greeted with a warning the first time you try to open one of these.* This is because your computer wants to protect you. The truth is that I'm just a poor little developer who doesn't have the means to let Apple and Microsoft know that I mean no harm. Just dismiss the warnings and continue for joy.

*For instructions as to how to dismiss these warnings, scroll to the bottom of the page.

Two cubes of different substances. One particle from each substance is shot into the opposing cube at the start.

Tissues and tubes of different substances, each with different properties, collide for your delight.

A sheet of green expels a cloud of brown, all in the name of visions profound. Watch and cry to the waltz of clots.

Yolks feverishly attempt to escape from these dark eggs only to light the dance of the husks.

Download Help (for Windows and macOS)

I can only host these downloads on my Google drive... so you'll just have to put up with Google's crap, okay?

1. When you arrive at the download screen, click the download icon in the top-right corner.
2. Click the "Download anyway" button.

Windows Install

1. In your Downloads folder, double-click the .zip file you just downloaded.

2. Now double click the file that was just created in your Downloads folder.

3. Double-click the SimSand.exe file in the folder you just opened.

You'll likely be greeted with an alarmingly savage blue warning window... Be sure to click "More info"... THEN click "Run anyway":

Boom. You're on your way to enjoying your new, tiny world.

macOS Install

1. In the Finder on your Mac, locate the app you want to open. (Go to your downloads folder).

2. Double click the .zip file you just downloaded and open the folder that it created.

3. Control-click the app icon, then choose "Open" from the shortcut menu. (Hold the "control" button on your keyboard and then click the app icon. OR, just right click the app icon.)

4. Click "Open".

The app is now saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it just as you can any registered app.

Note: You can also grant an exception for a blocked app by clicking the "Open Anyway" button in Privacy & Security settings. This button is available for about an hour after you try to open the app.

To change which apps can open on your Mac , choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Privacy & Security  in the sidebar, then go to Security. (You may need to scroll down.)
